Another designer at the ideal showroom I really liked. I somehow fit totally into Diana Brinks target group I guess ;-)

Well I'm still working on the personal style, but hhm somehow that sounds like the direction I'll see myself going. The "colours" are simple and minimalstic - hey black and white - and the cuts amazing. Her clothes can be worn in many different ways. I love it when you actually buy one piece of clothes and get so many possibilities out of it... Unfortuntaltely there isn't her ss08 collection online yet, but it's definitely worth to check her website every now and then.

Summer ist here again (let's see how long it's going to stay this time...). I guess I'll have to ask Hang to sew me a dress like that... It's quite usefull having fashion designers as friends ♥

bfw 05 ::: Jennifer Ann Gilpin

I've seen many many young interessting avantgarde designers while berlin fashion week. I took me a while to sort out all the business cards and look at all the websites and to make a choice of whom to post about.

One of the ones I really loved is the canadian designer Jennifer Ann Gilpin. Her gothic (?) inspired styles don't only look good, they even have an interessting concept (you know I love it when beautiful things become even more beautiful throughout a beautiful meaning/concept/theory).



"Jennifer Ann Gilpin is a limited collection of carefully crafted garments founded in both geometry and ecology. The designer has set out on a prolonged study of geometric principals and how they relate to the body through clothing. Beginning with the rectangle, triangle, and infinity shapes, then landing on the golden mean and Fibonacci. While using these principals as a foundation for the structure of the garments, she explores the shapes and silhouettes that relate to our time, and social identity. Means of production, materials, and processes are all considered for minimal wastage, and impact. The use of local materials and labor, along with the use of natural, and ecological fibers are integral." [...]

bfw 04 ::: Nokia Trends Lab

Most of the events at Berlin Fashion Week were for trade and professional visitors only. But a few were open to all fashionables and fashion obsessed.

So was Nokia's Trends Lab. Although I didn't enjoy it that much, probably because we came there kind of late when they already started to convert the "Kuppelsaal" of the Postfuhramt into a runway for the fashion presentations which took part on friday evening 13th (I haven't been there, because it was invitation only...), probably because of the badly kind of britney spears like styled hostesses, probably because of the lack of innovative fashion design (nokia seemed to have used this event only for promoting their newest mobile phones...) or probably because of the kindergarten like "let's be creative and expresse ourselfes" - atmosphere...

Works shown by surface2air (quite interessting!), wasted german youth (fuck me like the whore i am) and +41. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to take photos.

bfw 03 ::: Vivienne Westwood Anglomania SS 2008

Please don't ask how mary and I managed to get inside "the tent". But well we did. Please take my little crappy bad quality video as proof ;-)

I still don't understand how img could organize "the tent". The location was kind of nice - well the whole location - the models had to go through the Brandenburg gate, which was kind of cool, but entered a really crappy catwalk, totally cramped and looking like some kind of warehouse presentation space. Totally horrible, not to mention the heat! Is New York the same? Anyway. We had no seats of course but at least a quite nice standing room with a great overview.

The Anglomania collection was quite nice. Well it's just Vivienne Westwoods "small" line, but still had some quite interessting very wearable pieces, nothing overwhelming, but... I loved the neon green shoes, the black trench and some of the dresses.

bfw 02 ::: BÄNG! + you wear it well

"Bäng" is the name of an art exhibition that was part of the ideal's contribution to berlin fashion week curated by Magnus Müller. Part of the exhibition was the presentation of some videos of the you wear it well project by Diane Pernet (who managed to be there for the opening - wow I've never seen her before in real life...). I'll post my opinion of this attemt of connecting fashion and art later, since I agreed to write something about it for modabot.

But well, it's always hard to connect fashion and art. I would say it definitely is connected, but it's not easy to show the connection in an appropriate way. susie bubble wrote about a quite interessting exhibition at the gallery in soho/london called fashion is art.

"A whole host of British/London-based designers have been asked to design and create a piece that demonstrates artistry in fashion and every piece was auctioned off last Wednesday to aid Capital 95.8's 'Help a London Child'." [...]

Furthermore she says that fashion actually isn't art but can be and that this CAN isn't really shown in that exhibition - although it's still worth a visit!

I still haven't figured out the right way to communicate that connection, probably only in a conceptual way? Since art always runs the risk to be demoted as decoration - Bäng really was at the border. So I was very happy to be able to talk to the curator to sort out my thoughts. As already mentioned. I'll post my text here as soon at it hat been published ;-)
